Osmani: The political and military strengthening of the Alliance is our common interest

The first day of the NATO North Atlantic Council meeting at the level of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, attended by the Foreign Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia Bujar Osmani, was concluded at the Alliance Headquarters in Brussels. This is the first in-person meeting for a Foreign Minister at the Ministerial meetings since our becoming a member of NATO.

At today’s two sessions of the meeting, the Ministers addressed matters of strategic priority for the Alliance, such as regional stability, hybrid and cyber challenges, weapons control, disarmament and non-proliferation. The stability of NATO’s neighbourhood was also discussed, as well as the fight against terrorism and the situation in Afghanistan and Iraq.

At a separate session, the Ministers shared their suggestions and views on the development of the NATO 2030 document, which is subject to adoption at the upcoming North Atlantic Council meeting at the level of Heads of State and Government.

In his addresses Minister Osmani underlined the commitment of the Republic of North Macedonia as a new ally in the Alliance, to strengthening regional security, as well as the active involvement in maintaining global security. Osmani further emphasised the contribution of our country to tackling security threats and challenges. In that context, Minister Osmani highlighted the importance that the Alliance attaches to combatting terrorism and the activities undertaken to deal with this threat. Furthermore, he voiced support for the strategic proposals regarding the future conceptual development of the future of the Alliance contained in NATO 2030:

“The NATO 2030 Agenda at the right time offers ambitious views on the future of the Alliance in the next decade. We agree with the set goals: NATO to remain military strong, to become politically stronger and to have a stronger global approach”, Osmani emphasised.

During the NATO Foreign Ministers Council in Brussels, FM Osmani met with the U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. Their discussion focused on the strategic partnership between North Macedonia and USA which is the basis for the long-term friendship between the two countries.

In the margins of the meeting, Minister Osmani had a bilateral meeting with the Foreign Minister of Slovenia, AnžeLogar. Several current topics were discussed at the meeting, regarding the bilateral development of relations, the European perspective of the country, especially in the focus of the Slovenia’s upcoming Presidency with the EU in the second half of 2021.

“Our aim is clear – full-fledged EU membership and all our efforts are in that direction, to work in a European manner to attain European values. We expect valorization by our European partners for what has been achieved”, Osmani said at his meeting with Logar.

The NATO Ministerial continues tomorrow with several topics of importance for the future of the Alliance of interest for preserving world order peace and security.
